New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.

Trade Assistant – Electrical, Underground Electrical.
About The Role
Reporting to the
Supervisor – Underground Electrical, the
Underground Electrical Trade Assistant plays a key support role in assisting qualified underground electricians with maintenance, repairs, and installations. The position also involves carrying out general electrical support tasks independently to help minimize downtime, improve reliability, and ensure safe, effective underground mine operations.
In This Role, You Will
- Assist in the maintenance, repair, and installation of underground electrical systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
- Assist with cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining electrical equipment to ensure reliability and compliance.
- Support tradesmen with tasks such as cable pulling, termination preparation, and equipment setup.
- Prepare and organize tools, materials, and equipment required for electrical work.
- Operate support equipment such as integrated tool carriers and utility vehicles were required.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, parts used, and any issues identified.
- Follow instructions from qualified electricians and supervisors to ensure tasks are carried out safely and efficiently.
- Help manage parts and consumables inventory to support ongoing electrical maintenance.
- Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical issues under supervision.
- Ensure all activities comply with NPL’s safety, health, and environmental standards, while actively promoting a strong safety culture.
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:
- Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent education level.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English at an Upper Secondary School standard.
- Completion of the Job Ready Program or relevant trade-related training programs.
- Proven experience in a similar role, assisting in an electrical department or on a construction site (essential).
- Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
- Willingness to adhere to safety regulations and protocols.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from supervisors and tradespeople
- Physically fit and able to work in an underground environment and varying weather conditions
- Fluency in English and/or Tok Pisin is an advantage.
- Current PNG Class 1 or 6 Drivers license with ability to acquire a Site LV Driving Permit.
- Previous experience in operating an integrated tool carrier will be an advantage.
Mobilization Requirement
This is a PNG National Award position, a site-based role on a Walk in Walk out arrangement with rotation of 14 days on and 7 days off. Must successfully pass a pre-employment medical including drug and alcohol screening. (This will be arranged only for successful candidates who progress after the interview stage) and have an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Must a Local Porgeran (Cat 1A – SML, Cat 1B –LMP or Cat 2 – Other Porgera) candidate and available to start immediately.
